With summer temperatures soaring across Gaya district and frequent power outages adding to the discomfort, children and caregivers at creche centers with asbestos roofs have been facing challenging conditions. In response, a simple and innovative heat-mitigation measure has been introduced on a pilot basis in selected creche centers.
To reduce indoor temperatures, a layer of paddy straw (puwal) has been spread over the asbestos roofs of the centers. This locally available and cost-effective solution acts as a natural insulating layer, blocking direct sunlight and reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the roof. As a result, the rooms remain noticeably cooler and more comfortable throughout the day.
The pilot initiative has been successfully implemented in six creche centers—Jamuni, Gopalkheda, Musarshabda, Chaw, Piprahi, and Raghunathpur. Feedback from the centers has been highly encouraging, with a significant reduction in indoor heat reported. Both children and caregivers have experienced improved comfort, creating a more conducive environment for childcare and learning activities.
